what we do

  • We offer financial aid to children with ‘major medical illnesses’.
  • Our focus is on illnesses that are 'life threatening' or 'life changing’ due to major disability.
  • Our goal is to assist children from low socio economic families.
  • We work closely with reputed specialists across the city that are willing to provide free or highly subsidized care, in reputed government hospitals or state of the art private hospitals.
  • We raise funds from the community to support our program.
  • The administrative cost of running the trust is borne by the trustees.
  • 100% of the funds raised from the community are therefore utilized towards patient care.
  • Our vision is to make sure that every child receives the best possible medical care.
  • Our mission is to connect the community with critically ill children in need of financial help.

"To give away money is an easy matter, and in any man's power. But to decide to whom to give it, and how much and when, for what purpose and how, is not in every man's power, nor an easy matter. Such excellence is rare, praiseworthy and noble" - Aristotle.

We support all critical and severe illnesses in children.

Our Priorities

Is leukemia common in children?

In India:
  • 50,000 children below 15 years develop cancer each year.
  • Of these, half have blood cancer or leukaemia.

What is the treatment of leukemia?

  • Treatment involves chemotherapy and radiation.
  • Treatment is long, lasting for 2 years and expensive.

How much does the treatment cost?

  • In private hospitals the cost is around Rs 8 lakhs.
  • In government hospitals (Tata, Wadia) the cost is around Rs 3- 4 lakhs.
  • Due to economic reasons we are able to cater to only about 20% children.
  • Many families simply cannot afford the treatment and just take the child home once they know the diagnosis and what it involves. Others exhaust meagre family savings or take loans with devastating consequences on the whole family including the other normal children.

  • Childhood leukemia has a 80-90% cure rate.
  • Without treatment the disease is fatal within a few months.

Why is childhood leukemia a priority for Healing Touch?

  • Childhood malignancy is devastating for the child and the entire family.
  • The economic and emotional trauma of treatment spread over 3 years is unimaginable.
  • The good news: Childhood leukemia is curable-80-90% of children survive and lead normal lives.
  • There is a human element in childhood cancers -‘Some days I had to tell myself ‘Get through the next 5 minutes and I did it. I made it through 18 months of my child’s treatment, 5 minutes at a time” Mother of a cancer survivor.

What can I do to help?

  • Healing Touch has tied up with major private and government hospitals to offer subsidised treatment to low income families.
  • All we need is financial assistance.

Families fighting cancer should not worry about where and how they are going to get the next dose of medicine to save their child’s life.

Fortunately, with good medical care, the long term outcome is usually good, and these children can lead long, normal and healthy lives.

The silent sufferers

Is hearing impairment common?

In India:
  • 2 per 1000 children are born with hearing impairment.
  • 1 child with hearing impairment is born every 5 minutes.
  • 24 million children have severe hearing impairment.
  • 1 lakh infants are born every year with severe hearing impairment.

What are the effects of hearing impairment?

Hearing loss can lead to delayed language development, difficulties with behaviour and social interactions and poor academic achievement and quality of life.

What is the treatment for hearing impairment?

Infants with profound hearing impairment need surgery - cochlear implant surgery to restore their hearing.

The results of surgery are excellent. After surgery, these children have normal hearing and cognitive ability, can be educated and lead normal lives.

What is the cost of treatment?

Cochlear implants are expensive. The cost of surgery is Rs 6-7 lakhs due to the high cost of the cochlear implant. Very few children can afford to get operated.

Why is hearing impairment one of our priorities?

The hearing impaired are ‘silent sufferers’. The impact of severe hearing impairment can be devastating at the emotional, social and economic level.

The good news is that the results of surgery are excellent and post surgery children can lead normal lives.

What can we do to help?

Healing Touch has tied up with leading hospitals to offer cochlear implants to needy children at subsidized rates.

All we need is financial support to bring back the sound and joy in their lives.

Fortunately, with good medical care, the long term outcome is usually good, and these children can lead long, normal and healthy lives.

Is it common for newborns to need intensive care?

  • Neonatal mortality comprises 50% of childhood mortality.
  • Neonatal mortality rate in India is 41 per 1000 live births compared to less than 8 per 1000 in the developed world.

What is neonatal intensive care?

Preterm infants weigh less (750- 2000 Gms) and are often born 2-3 months early. All the organs are functionally immature. The immature lungs make it difficult for these babies to breathe and they need to be put on the ventilator (artificial respiration). They are unable to digest milk and need to be kept on intravenous nutrition till they can tolerate milk. They are at risk for infection due to less immunity.

What is the cost of neonatal intensive care?

Preterm babies need to stay in the neonatal intensive care (NICU) for as long as 3 months before parents are able to look after them at home.

Neonatal care is expensive. Even though government hospitals don’t charge patients, the cost of supportive care can be prohibitive for many families.

The cost of care for baby < 1000 grams is around Rs. 1.5 lakhs

Is neonatal care effective?

The results of neonatal intensive care are nothing short of a miracle. Even the smallest babies under 1 kg have an 80 % survival. Bigger babies almost always do well.

The good news is that most of the survivors grow to be normal healthy adults and lead normal happy lives.

Why is neonatal care a priority for Healing Touch?

For a doctor, there is no greater challenge than to help the smallest and weakest amongst us survive. And there is no greater satisfaction than to see these miracles go home to an ecstatic family.

Results of NICU are excellent in private hospitals. However a lack of optimum supportive care due to economic reasons affects the results in government hospitals where the less privileged families are looked after.

What can we do to help?

Healing Touch has tied up with government hospitals to provide financial assistance for newborns fighting their lonely battle in the NICU.

Financial assistance can provide these babies with expensive medications and other supportive care.

Wise Words from a NICU MOM:
NICU Babies are true survivors.
They show us the power of faith and prayer,
And the strength of the human spirit

Fortunately, with good medical care, the long term outcome is usually good, and these children can lead long, normal and healthy lives.

Is congenital heart disease common?

In India:

  • 2.5 to 3 lakh infants are born in India every year with congenital heart disease.
  • Out of these 1 lakh to 80,000 will need some kind of intervention.
  • Only 10,000 children receive treatment. Most families simply cannot afford the cost of treatment.

What is the treatment for congenital heart disease?

  • Open heart surgery is needed in 60-70 % of cases.
  • Angioplasty can treat the remaining 30-40% of cases.

Is treatment effective?

  • Due to economic reasons and lack of high quality medical care, almost 75000 infants born with congenital heart disease die in India die every year.
  • Government hospitals treat 20- 25% of these cases but are unable to cope with the number of children requiring treatment and often lack facilities to treat complex cases.
  • The good news is that post surgery, most children do well and lead normal lives.

How much does treatment cost?

  • Even in general / free wards of private hospitals, heart surgery is expensive due to the high cost of consumables.
  • Average cost of surgery for each procedure in a private setup is Rs 2 lakhs for open heart and 1 lakh for closed heart procedures.

Why is congenital heart a priority for Healing Touch?

  • Congenital heart disease is common – seen in 8 per 1000 births.
  • Congenital heart disease is life threatening but the results of surgery are excellent. With interventional surgery children go back home in 2-3 days and with open heart surgery in 10 days.

What can we do to help?

  • Healing Touch has tied up with state of the art private hospitals to offer subsidised care to these children.

All we need is financial assistance to mend their hearts.

Fortunately, with good medical care, the long term outcome is usually good, and these children can lead long, normal and healthy lives.
